The Florida Gators aren't much closer to naming Tim Tebow's backup. Cameron Newton and John Brantley danced this same dance last season, with Newton winning out. Now Coach Urban Meyer said he probably won't name the backup until right before the season opener Aug. 30 against Hawaii.
In Wednesday's scrimmage, Meyer said Brantley started out looking like a "deer in the headlights" but played well eventually.
"Once (you) smack the cobwebs out of him he was good,"
Meyer said. "He had some great plays."
Brantley is a dropback passer with limited mobility. Newton is more of a runner.
"We actually had him be live in our red zone (Wednesday),"
Meyer said of Newton. "Maybe (he will) take some of the burden off of (Tebow)."
Newton attempted just 10 passes last season as the backup but finished with 104 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns.
