UF freshmen to watch

Florida coach Urban Meyer has said he's not going to redshirt true freshmen anymore, starting with the No. 1-ranked 2007 recruiting class.

That, of course, won't happen because some of these freshmen (especially on the offensive line) are going to need time to develop and simply won't be ready to contribute this season.

But many true freshmen will be factors this fall.

Here's a look at the ones we think will have the most immediate impact:

1. Cameron Newton — He's going to enter the season as the No. 2 quarterback and Meyer said he plans playing two quarterbacks in 2007. So, Cameron Newton is going to see the field early. How often will depend on how quickly he picks up the offense.

2. Chris Rainey — The coaches are looking for another Percy Harvin-type player on the edge and Rainey has the kind of speed and ability to fill the role. If Rainey comes ready to play, the little guy could be a big factor early in the offense.

3. Torrey Davis — The Gators lack depth and experience at defensive tackle and this highly rated prospect will have a chance to jump right into the playing rotation. He's physically ready to go. Now, his playing time will depend on how quickly he learns the defense.

4. Joe Haden — Haden may be the most gifted pure athlete in the class and definitely benefitted from enrolling early and participating in spring drills. He could be a big-time running back or receiver, but the Gators desperately need help at cornerback and that's where Haden is getting his first shot. He came on strong in the spring and will be battling for a starting role when two-a-days begin in August.

5. Justin Trattou — The Gators have almost zero depth at defensive end and this prospect looks like he's physically ready to play. He's strong, fast off the edge and could provide a boost for the Gators' pass rush.

6. Aaron Hernandez — This kid really came on in the second half of the spring and looks like he's going to give the Gators yet another playmaker in the passing game. He's quick and athletic and once he gains confidence in his pass-catching ability, he'll be a regular contributor.

Here are some others we see playing early: linebacker Lorenzo Edwards, defensive tackle John Brown (if, as now expected, he qualifies academically), wide receiver Deonte Thompson, offensive lineman James Wilson, safety/linebacker Major Wright, safety Jerimy Finch, defensive end/tackle Carlos Dunlap, defensive end Jerry Howard, tailback Bo Williams and possibly quarterback John Brantley.
