Inside Dish: Mauk might be Cincinnati's man
It appears Wake Forest transfer QB Ben Mauk, the former uberrecruit from Ohio, will be healthy when fall camp begins next week at Cincinnati. That's big news for a team that's a quarterback away from doing damage in the Big East race. The staff has been overly cautious with Mauk even though his surgically repaired shoulder hasn't kept him away from offseason workouts. Dustin Grutza, last year's starter, struggled this spring to learn new coach Brian Kelly's spread offense -- a system that seems like a perfect fit for the strong-armed and athletic Mauk. ...
Florida coach Urban Meyer says he no longer will redshirt freshmen. Anyone who can play will. That's either an indictment of the returning personnel at Florida or an indication of the talent in the Gators' No. 1- ranked recruiting class. At the very least, the number of freshmen playing significant minutes will be in double digits. Among them: QB Cameron Newton, the team's top backup, and speedy WR/RB Chris Rainey, who will be used much like star Percy Harvin was last season. ...
The Big 12 is running into a familiar problem in its search for a new commissioner: A few top candidates have proposed an equal revenue-sharing plan to replace the current revenue distribution, a plan that's not popular among league heavyweights Texas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Don't be surprised if the search committee takes another run at Oklahoma A.D. Joe Castiglione, who signed a hefty contract extension after the league made initial overtures.
