Notebook: Ex-USC tailback visits Gators

Former Southern Cal running back Emmanuel Moody described Gainesville in one word during his visit to the University of Florida on Thursday."Country," Moody said. "But it's not like Hickville. It's a nice, peaceful area."

It's certainly a big change from Los Angeles, where Moody recently left after being the Trojans' second-leading rusher last season. Moody is seeking a transfer in a search for more playing time, a result of USC's deep and talented backfield.

Moody visited Gainesville Thursday with his mother and uncle, touring campus and attending part of Florida's football practice Thursday afternoon.

Moody visited North Carolina Wednesday and said he will next visit Oklahoma State and Texas.

"This is like going through the recruiting process all over again," he said.

Moody rushed for 459 yards and two touchdowns on 79 carries as a true freshman at Southern Cal last season.

Moody, a native of Coppell, Texas, must enroll in fall classes if he is to participate in spring drills. That means his final decision could come some time this week.

"I'm going to take my visits and consult with my family," Moody said.

Brown's status once again muddy

Another day passed without Florida hearing word from the NCAA Clearinghouse about the status of freshman defensive tackle John Brown.

Brown did not practice for the third straight day as he and the Gators await word on from the NCAA.

"We're at the mercy of the (NCAA) Clearinghouse," coach Urban Meyer said.

Meyer to pick backup QB Saturday

Meyer said he will wait until Saturday to announce who his backup quarterback is in addition to releasing who the team's captains are.

Meyer said earlier this week the team's captains have already been chosen, but he wasn't ready to release it yet. Freshmen Cameron Newton and John Brantley are battling for the backup quarterback spot behind sophomore Tim Tebow.
